At the heart of building a sustainable society lies a fundamental requirement: literacy. Literacy is a very broad term. It is not just about reading and writing, but a basic human right and a crucial foundation for personal and social development. Literacy enables individuals to communicate and cope in the 21st century. Literacy enables individuals to communicate and find their way in the 21st century. Those who can read and write have access to information, can acquire knowledge and can participate in the social, economic and political environment.

Since 1967, UNESCO has established International Literacy Day, which is celebrated every year around the world to remind the public of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and to advance the agenda for a better informed and more sustainable society.

The theme for the 2023 International Literacy Day celebration is “Promoting literacy for a world in transition: Building the foundation for sustainable and peaceful societies”. But how does literacy promote a sustainable society? Let us take a look.

People who indulge in reading have the opportunity to succeed. In a sustainable society, like the one we have at Glendale International School, our students are trained to make the right choices and are equipped for the future that lies ahead.

Literacy focuses on social inclusion by giving people the opportunity to learn how to engage in meaningful social relationships. Our society here has sustainable values and serves to connect people from all over the world while creating an equal environment.

In the 21st century, with the rapid development of  information and technology, people have no choice but to learn new skills, refresh their knowledge and keep pace with the changing society. Literacy promotes continuous growth and development in a sustainable society where innovation and flexibility are very important.

Sustainability hinges on responsible resource management and environmental stewardship. Literacy plays a pivotal role in fostering environmental consciousness

In Glendale, literacy means more than just a basic skill. To create a sustainable society, we believe in long-term learning that empowers individuals, promotes social inclusion and raises environmental awareness.

Let us celebrate this International Literacy Day in a sustainable way.

Happy International Literacy Day!
